Today, a particular form of respiratory sleep disorder carries the name of the nymph. It was probably the inspiration for a European myth known as “ Ondine’s curse,” in which a jilted nymph sentences her human lover to have to remember automatic bodily functions, including breathing. The condition has been recognized for some time.
